Soapstone is a metamorphic rock, a quarried stone known for its unique silky smooth surface. There are 2 types of soapstone: Artistic soapstone which is made of mainly talc. It is soft and an excellent medium for carvings.
Architectural soapstone is a harder and denser stone which makes it an excellent choice for countertops. It requires minimal maintenance. Soapstone is grey in colour with various amounts of veining. The stone will darken over time developing a natural patina. Mineral oil is applied on a regular basis to accelerate the darkening process. It has been used as a medium for carvings for thousands of years.
